Ruby-Throated Hummingbird - Male
Springerville, AZ - Sipe White Mountain Wildlife Area - A flash of green and red, the Ruby-throated Hummingbird is eastern North America’s sole breeding hummingbird. These brilliant, tiny, precision-flying creatures glitter like jewels in the full sun, then vanish with a zip toward the next nectar source. Feeders and flower gardens are great ways to attract these birds, and some people turn their yards into buzzing clouds of hummingbirds each summer. Enjoy them while they’re around; by early fall they’re bound for Central America, with many crossing the Gulf of Mexico in a single flight.

on February 17, 2019Well done, Rick! I wonder how you got the little guy to sit still long enough to take the shot...the ones I see never sit still! :)

on January 5, 2019Nice view of this hummer. I see that you shot it in Arizona--I wonder if it is a Broad-tailed Hummingbird rather than a Ruby-throat. Just thinking of the expected ranges of the two, plus a few field marks. Of course I'm only seeing one view, but that would be my guess. No matter what species, it's a really nice image.

on January 4, 2019Hummingbirds are endlessly endearing. So true about enjoying them while they're around. Here in Michigan it's a relatively brief season, maybe May through September, if that long.
