Socorro, NM - Historic Plaza Area - The Capitol Bar started life out as the Biavaschi Saloon in 1896 and was created to celebrate, serve and share the brother's locally grown and produced wine with townspeople and travelers alike. (Few people know that Socorro was one of the first areas in the U.S. that vineyards were planted. It even predates the Napa Valley.) At the time of the bar's completion the town of Socorro New Mexico consisted of 3000 residents and 30 bars, an outrageous ratio by today's standards. Throughout its checkered past it was owned by a judge, who held court inside the bar and is rumored to have had a hanging tree outside, used as a speakeasy and has burned down a time or two and has become a local favorite of travelers, bikers, college students and politicians alike.

on April 11, 2019Very interesting information. I had no idea that Socorro was a wine producing area before Napa Valley was. It's interesting that the town had so many bars. I guess that tells a story in and of itself. Super shot!

on April 11, 2019I spent my share of time in bars in the USAF enjoying a cold beer or whiskey. After I became a cop I spent my share of time in bars, not to drink but to stand over someone who didn't make it out the door. (Aka; crime scene) Nice photo Rick.

on April 11, 2019Your description makes me sorry I was under the legal drinking age when I spent a summer in Socorro (never mind how long ago). It sounds like an interesting place.
