Oak Ridge Cemetery - John R. Tanner Tomb

Springfield, IL - Oak Ridge Cemetery - John R. Tanner was born in Indiana and grew up near Carbondale, Illinois. He enlisted as volunteer in the 98th Illinois Infantry in 1863 and returned to farming after the war. From 1880 to 1883, he served as an Illinois State Senator. He then became State Treasurer in 1886. He was a Republican; and in 1882, he was elected Assistant U.S. Treasurer. In 1896, He became the twenty third Governor of Illinois.
